Looking back at all the climate events that shook the world in 2019 and much of 2020, it’s safe to say that as far as nature goes, we have reached the tipping point. In the fashion industry, this means challenging the world of fast fashion and encouraging customers to invest in quality clothes that can be re-used for a long time. Fashion has become the second largest polluting industry in the world. From adding to landfills, polluting rivers with toxic dyes, to manipulating artists that help create this art. There is something really wrong in the way this industry has grown: however, consumers can make conscious decisions to help change that. British designer Stella McCartney wrote on her website that 'eco' shouldn't be a word "that immediately conjures up images of oatmeal-coloured fashion or garments that are oversized or lacking in any luxury or beauty, detailing or desirability." Essentially, these are clothes that one can wear daily and still feel good in, but with some extra costs than usual high street shops. Like any bad habit, this one can be hard to break and challenge for many, but there is still a great way to go shopping for statement pieces and clothes, while also being sustainable. Here's our guide to three of India’s best brands, that got the sustainability style right! 1. Doodleage The champion of eco-fashion since 2013, this New-Delhi based label has made it their mission to re-think the way fashion is pursued in today’s world. Founded by NIFT graduate, Kirti Tula, this high-street brand believes in a new wave of innovative designs that are made from recycled industrial wastes. We love the pastel cotton kurta’s and stripe dresses in neutral tones. The fact that every last piece of material is used even if it's just for ruffles or buttons, is a feat that few fashion brands have managed to achieve and that is absolutely commendable! Check out their Instagram for some sustainable style inspo @doodleage. 2. Bodice Worn by the likes of Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt and Sonam Kapoor this home-grown label based in the heart of Delhi needs no introduction at all. Bodice is the brainchild of Ruchika Sachdeva who graduated from London College of Fashion and has worked with the likes of Vivienne Westwood before returning back to start her own staple. Winner of the 2018 Woolmark Prize, Bodice is changing the way the world looks at Indian fashion while also inculcating sustainability at the heart of all its designs. We love the pastel pleated pants and the new spin on traditional Indian sari. You can see all their latest designs and the behind-the-scenes for each on @bodicebodice. 3. Ka-Sha For everyone that keeps complaining about sustainable fashion lacking pop, Ka-sha is your go-to answer. One look at their Instagram feed and you will be convinced that anything so bright and colorful cannot be earth-friendly, and yet, the colorful collection will surprise you! Started by Karishma Sahani, this urban label takes the best of traditional and modern to blend it into beautifully tailored. For some extra dose of visual aesthetics, check out @Ka-Sha on Instagram. Don’t blame us if you end up buying while scrolling through the gram. AuthorPriyanka Rajput - Writer for AURA
